"Free" as in beer, not as in freedom. Sure, free beer is good, but the 100% pure spirit of open source tastes better!

Good news.

I always felt that the lack of a decent debugger in the free version of R was its greatest drawback when compared to MATLAB.

This is a very smart move by Revolution R Enterprise. It's a much better option for a lot of students then SAS on Demand for Academics.
