When John Chambers -- one of the original designers of the S programming language that evolved into R -- won the ACM Software System Award in 1998, he generously donated the prizemoney to the American Statistical Association to create an annual award for statistical software created by a student.
Nominations are now open for the 2009 award. The deadline for submissions in Monday, February 23 2009. The winner will be announced in May, and will receive $1000 cash and travel to the 2009 Joint Statistical Meeting.
