According to a survey of 348 data miners conducted in early 2008 by Rexer Analytics, 5% of respondents use R "most frequently". For comparison, the most-used software was SPSS Clementine (with 18% of respondents reporting they use it most frequently), and the next most frequent response was SAS at 13%.
R usage is apparently growing. 23% of respondents reported using R in 2006 "occasionally" or "frequently"; in 2007 that number has jumped to 36% of respondents. The most frequent response in this category was SPSS, which nonetheless showed a year-on-year decline (2006: 48%, 2007: 45%).
