Fruminator has created a fantastic mash-up of R, OpenGeo, and a very unique data-set: the annual ridership of every New York City subway station since 1905. Each station is represented by a sparkline (generated by R) on a city map. Booms and busts in ridership are clearly visible in the various micro-regions of the city, as a result of influences like Yankee Stadium or even economic downturns as seen in this map of the financial district:
