I can't speak to the course by Hastie and Tibshirani, but I will certainly echo the support for Wickham's ggplot2 course. I took it a week and a half ago, before the JSM meetings. It was a great one-day introduction to using ggplot2. A dedicated student could teach themself everything in the course using materials on the web; but despite having been interested in using ggplot2, I found the course a much easier way to quickly come up to speed. Wickham also keeps a great eye on data exploration throughout, and his teaching of the tool supports that.
