The Wehrmacht tried to estimate the number of tanks on the Russian front by counting numbers sprayed on the armor of Russian tanks. It has been a long time since I've heard of this and don't know the details, but perhaps someone else can chip in.

Does any one know a good book on statisticians and war? What problems they faced? what solutions they come up with?
