I really love this series of retro-futuristic paintings from Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag. Digitally painted with a tablet and pen, he imagines Scandinavian landscapes where 80s-era vehicles co-exist with futuristic walkers, hovering farm equipment and derelict structures of strange purpose. This one is my favourite:
I love the innocence/menace of the kids controlling the walker. Are the police there to reprimand boys playing with equipment they shouldn't be? Or are the kids on a rampage, threatening the police? All of the paintings feature some kind of unanswered question like that. If you like them as much as I can do, you can buy prints from his website. The Verge also has a great interview with the artist, and more examples of his work.
That's all for now, but you can always check out out previous Because it's Friday posts. Have a great weekend!
