I found Doing Data Science to be a useful, but maddening book to read, mainly due to the somewhat philosophical interludes and the compilation of blog entries / classroom summaries that formed it.

The mathematical sections also could be very abrupt, eg. suddenly covering say the matrix form of linear regression in a paragraph or two.

For me, the sections derived from the class speakers was the best part.
I think most readers will have success leafing through and finding parts that appeal to them.
