It's the 4th of July holiday here in the US, and we're taking a break to eat hotdogs, watch fireworks and other essential American activities. So this is a good day to reflect: what is America, anyway? It turns out that the details are a bit complicated...
(There's a similar story regarding the British Empire, also by CGP Grey.) To our American readers, enjoy the holiday! We'll be back on Monday.
This is a great video. It's especially relevant for me because I make choropleths of the US and after getting shapefiles from the census bureau I had to decide whether or not to remove Puerto Rico. I wound up removing it because that's the standard thing to do, but I had no idea that their population was larger than so many of the US States! I also had no idea about that Native American Reservations were so large.
